We Audited 50 UK Solicitor Websites — Here's What We Found

We ran 50 UK law firm websites through our free Site Analyzer. The results were shocking — 72% had critical SEO issues, and the average performance score was just 41/100.

Last week, we put 50 UK solicitor websites through our free GreenLight Site Analyzer — the same AI-powered audit tool that's available to anyone at analyzer.greenlightdigitalmedia.co.uk. The results paint a clear picture of an industry that's spending thousands on websites that actively push clients away.

The Numbers Don't Lie

Average performance score: 41/100. Average SEO score: 52/100. Average accessibility score: 63/100. Only 6 out of 50 sites scored above 70 overall. That means 88% of these firms are leaving significant business on the table.

The 5 Most Common Problems

  • Slow page load times — 78% took over 4 seconds to load on mobile. The legal sector average was 5.2 seconds. Google recommends under 2.5 seconds.
  • Missing meta descriptions — 64% had pages without meta descriptions, meaning Google writes their search snippets for them (badly).
  • No schema markup — 82% had zero structured data. No LocalBusiness, no LegalService, no FAQ schema. They're invisible to rich search results.
  • Oversized images — the average solicitor homepage loaded 4.7MB of images. The top performers loaded under 800KB.
  • Missing security headers — 71% were missing Content-Security-Policy, and 54% lacked HSTS headers.

What the Top 6 Do Differently

The 6 firms that scored above 70 shared common traits: WebP image format, lazy loading, comprehensive schema markup, sub-2-second load times, and regularly updated blog content. Interestingly, none of them had the most expensive-looking designs — they simply had well-optimised ones.

The Quick Wins Most Firms Are Missing

The exciting thing is that most of these issues are fixable in a day. Compressing images alone would improve 78% of these sites dramatically. Adding meta descriptions takes 30 minutes. Implementing basic schema markup takes an hour. Our AI action plan generates exactly these prioritised fixes for any website — completely free.

Industry Benchmark: Where Does Your Firm Stand?

If you're a solicitor reading this, here's your benchmark: the average UK solicitor website scores 41 for performance, 52 for SEO, and 63 for accessibility. If you're above those numbers, you're already ahead of most competitors. If you're below, you're actively losing potential clients to firms with better-optimised sites.
